“Barbie” continues to see life in pink. The film directed by Greta Gerwig passed the billion dollar mark at the global box office this weekend, a first for a solo director, according to estimates on Sunday by the specialized firm Exhibitor Relations.
With the duo Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, already iconic as Barbie and Ken, the comedy which features the doll venturing into the real world totals more than 1.03 billion dollars worldwide, including 459 million dollars in North America. It is the second film to reach this symbolic figure this year after “The Super Mario Bros”.
“The film has captured the imagination of moviegoers around the world and these results are incredibly impressive,” said Paul Dergarabedian, media analyst at specialist company Comscore.

What relaunch speculation around a sequel. Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz, who is looking to take a bigger role in entertainment, said in a July 27 interview with Bloomberg TV that it was too early to confirm.
