The Barbie film has passed the 1 billion dollar mark worldwide (more than 908 million euros). The film, which is still running in cinemas, ranks with blockbusters such as The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003, more than 1.1 billion dollars in revenue worldwide), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011, more than 1.3 billion dollars) and Black Panther (2018, nearly $1.4 billion).

It is the first time a film by a female director has grossed more than $1 billion. The superhero movie Captain Marvel (2019) also grossed $1 billion, but it was directed by a male and female director duo. Barbie was directed by Greta Gerwig, who was also largely responsible for the film’s story.

In Barbie the main character, played by Margot Robbie, moves from the Barbie world to the real world. The film shows, among other things, the differences between the matriarchal culture (in which women have more say) in the Barbie world and the patriarchal culture (in which men have the higher positions of power) in the real world.

Woke

The film was well received by critics, but has been labeled “woke” in extremely conservative circles. Popular American conservative commentator Ben Shapiro and politician Ted Cruz, among others, criticized the film’s themes. However, this does not affect the yields in any way. The film has grossed more in three weeks than any other film from the film studio Warner Bros. ever. The studio said it was “speechless and that the film is outperforming the company’s most positive predictions.”

This puts the film in a row of only 53 films that grossed more than 1 billion dollars, but is the only one that is still playing in cinemas. The next possible milestone would be the $2 billion mark worldwide. So far, only six films have managed to break that barrier. Avatar (2009, nearly 3 billion), Avengers Endgame (2019, nearly 2.8 billion), Avatar: The Way of Water (2022, 2.3 billion), Titanic (1997, 2.3 billion), Star Wars: Episode VII (2015, 2.1 billion) and Avengers: Infinity War (2018, nearly 2.1 billion).
