This is one of the best weekends in the history of the American film industry. “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” left more than $300 million at the box office. For now, it’s said to be the fourth best weekend ever. However, it may be second if Warner Bros. and Universal are playing it safe and have underestimated the actual openings of their premieres.
However, this huge success was by no means certain. Back in June, when successive releases were disappointing, everyone was saying with one voice that Warner and Universal had made a mistake by deciding to release two big movies at the same time. This was reflected in the forecasts they gave “Barbie” just over $50 million, a “Oppenheimerowi” 30 million.
And then – mainly thanks to the stars and creators of both films – the narrative changed. They stopped talking about the competition, and started talking about who will see first and which second. So he was born Barbenheimer, which quickly went viral on social media. Forecasts of openings began to grow like weeds. Cinema chains noticed this and started offering double-features, during which you could watch both premieres.
However, the reality exceeded the wildest expectations. Currently, Warner Bros. states that “Barbie” will earn $155 million to open. Other studios expect a result of around $160 million.
Even Warner’s projections mean that “Barbie” broke the record for this year’s openingwhich previously belonged to “Super Mario Bros. Movie” and amounted to USD 146.4 million. What’s more, it’s already Warner Bros.’s best-selling release of the year.
It is also the opening record for a film shot by a woman. The previous one belonged to “Captain Marvel” and amounted to USD 153.4 million.
For the studio, which has had several spectacular flops of its comic productions this year “Barbie” is a very important signal that Warner Bros. what counts is the box-office game.

Universal Pictures also needed a box office success after having performed horribly in American theaters “Fast and Furious 10”. I “Oppenheimer” delivered it. The studio’s current projections are $80 million to open. For a 3-hour show, it’s a downright staggering start.
“Oppenheimer” can also boast the second best result in the history of films that did not debut on the first better. Only the animation fared better in this category “It’s not in my head” ($90.4 million), which lost to “Jurassic World”.
Unfortunately Barbenheimer’s success is very bad news for Tom Cruise. After a weaker than expected opening “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning – Part One”, now it has not been possible to limit the declines. They amounted to as much as 64%, which made the film lose not only to both new releases, but also to the independent one “Sound of Freedom”.
After the first five days of display “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning – Part One” he had the best score in the entire series. After twelve days, with the amount of USD 118.8 million, it fell to third place. They held up better: “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” ($134.9 million) and “Mission: Impossible 2” ($130.7 million). This is bad news for hyper-expensive production.
In turn mentioned “Sound of Freedom” he is completely immune to Barbenheimer’s hysteria. The film recorded the smallest fall within the top 10 – 26% – and is currently the lowest-priced production to gross at least $100 million in US theaters.

*opening result from the weekend alone
This weekend, Disney will try to fight for the viewer, which will introduce “Haunted Mansion”. A24, in turn, will offer Australian horror “Talk to me!”. One of the biggest box-office hits in Japanese history will also hit theaters “The First Slam Dunk”.
