Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Russia launched an air missile attack on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, Thursday (29/4/2022). The attack was carried out as the United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, was on a visit to the city.
A UN spokesman said Guterres and his team were “shocked” by the immediacy of the Russian strike hitting an area close to the center of Kyiv.
The attack was said to be Russia’s most audacious attack on the Ukrainian capital since Moscow’s troops withdrew a few weeks ago.
“This is a war zone but it is surprising that it is happening so close to us,” the spokesman for the UN’s humanitarian office, Saviano Abreu, told Al Jazeera.
This attack received a hot response from Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said this was part of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s maneuver to humiliate the UN.
“Today, immediately after the end of our talks in Kyiv, Russian missiles flew into the city. Five rockets. And this says a lot about the efforts of the Russian leadership to humiliate the UN and everything that the organization represents,” Zelensky said.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, added on his Twitter account that Russia’s actions were barbaric and heinous.
“Russia attacked Kyiv with cruise missiles just as UN Secretary General @antonioguterres and Bulgarian PM @KirilPetkov were visiting our capital. With this heinous act of barbarism, Russia is once again showing its attitude towards Ukraine, Europe and the world,” he tweeted.
Guterres’ visit to Ukraine comes a day after his party visited Putin in Moscow. On that occasion, he asked Putin to stop his attacks because it was against the UN charter.
Even so, the two reportedly began to agree on the point that the United Nations and the International Red Cross could start running a humanitarian corridor for the evacuation of residents trapped at the Azovstal steel plant located in the city of Mariupol.
Meanwhile, during his visit to Kyiv, Guterres and Zelensky discussed the follow-up to the humanitarian corridor agreement. It was stated that at this time the residents who were in the steel factory were in a state of deadly danger.
