Almost 20 years after the release of Shakira’s global hit, a statue in tribute to the singer was inaugurated this Tuesday, December 26 in her hometown of Barranquilla, Colombia. And it’s his swaying hips in the video clip for the song, whose title means “hips don’t lie”, who served as a model.
Shakira herself made the announcement on her social networks with multiple photos and videos. The statue depicts her with her arms crossed above her head, dressed in a skirt and bra, her hips swaying as in her signature dance move.

The work made of bronze and aluminum was created by the sculptor “Yino Márquez with students of the district art school”, explained Shakira on X (ex-Twitter), and measures no less than 6.5 meters high.
“Hips that don’t lie, incomparable talent, a voice that touches the masses,” is it written at the feet of the statue unveiled during a public ceremony attended by the singer’s parents, William Mebarak and Nidia Ripoll, as well as her brothers.
