Bar awards in the Corona year for Frankfurt, Freiburg and Bremen

October 12, 2020 – 6:12 am Clock

Bars in Frankfurt am Main, Freiburg im Breisgau and Bremen are the winners of the Mixology Bar Awards, which were changed in the Corona year. In other instead of the usual categories, “The Kinly Bar” in Frankfurt’s Bahnhofsviertel, the “One Trick Pony” in Freiburg’s Oberlinden district and the “Lemon Lounge” on Bremen’s Stadtgraben were awarded. Because going out and bar business has been slowed down due to the coronavirus pandemic, the makers decided this time to reward heads of the scene for their work during the crisis and to encourage them to act.

The awards have been around since 2007. Usually there are categories such as “Bar of the Year”. As such, the Frankfurt “Kinly Bar” had already been awarded for 2020 in autumn 2019. For 2019 it was the “Velvet” in Berlin-Neukölln. “New Bar of the Year” in 2020 was the “Bar am Wasser” in Zurich and in 2019 the “Jigger & Spoon” in Stuttgart-Mitte.

The print magazine “Mixology” and the portal “mixology.eu”, which were taken over by Meininger Verlag (Neustadt an der Weinstrasse) at the beginning of 2020, deal with trends from the world of counters.

Editor-in-chief Nils Wrage told the German Press Agency that in view of the significant corona changes and long breaks in many bars in Germany, it would have been strange to carry on normally and to award bars, hotel bars and other locations for the coming year. “After a brief moment of paralysis, many bars have impressed us in recent months by converting the crisis into positive energy for themselves.”

The award-winning “Kinly” in Frankfurt started as a cellar bar in the notorious Elbestraße behind an inconspicuous door that you have to ring. There is only room for about 30 to 40 people. Because of Corona, the operators are currently only allowed to let in 14 people and accordingly send hundreds away every weekend.

The makers are currently building their “Kinly 2.0” bar at a new location, which not only uses a much larger area, but also follows an urban gardening concept. The entire team is involved in its implementation. The “Kinly” makers received the bar award in the “Sustainability & Education” category.

The Freiburg “One Trick Pony” won in the “Strategy & Future” category because the makers courageously established a second mainstay alongside the classic gastro business. The two operators Boris Gröner and Andreas Schöler have founded a liquor store: Their “Chin Chin Shop” is completely separate from the bar and offers homemade bottled cocktails, spirits from friendly manufacturers and high-quality bar tools. The area can also be used for workshops, tastings and seminars.

The Bremen “Lemon Lounge” was awarded for its “Concept in Bottles”. The bar succeeds in making its range of bottled cocktails accessible to interested parties outside of its own rooms.

The “Bar Back Know How” app by Stephan Hinz (Cologne) also received a so-called community prize, which enables professionals and amateurs to deepen their knowledge of cocktails and drinks.

In addition, the Kaltenthaler distillery (Worms) and the contemporary Consulting agency (Frankfurt) received an award for their “Quarantini Social Dry Gin”. With this gin, 5 euros go to local bars, restaurants and retailers for each bottle sold.

The dedicated bartender Susanne Baró Fernández, who runs the small bar “Timber Doodle” in Berlin-Friedrichshain, was honored as a “lighthouse”.
