Rameshchandra Gangaram “Bapu” Nadkarni was one of the stingiest bowlers the cricketing world has ever seen. He was very stingy and it was very difficult for the players to score runs against him. It can be said that he hated giving away runs so much.
Nadkarni was famous for bowling the batsmen flawlessly, making scoring almost impossible. It is often said that when practicing in the nets, a coin was dropped on the pitch and he would practice striking the coin with each delivery. He had a career economy rate of less than 2.00 runs per over.
Nadkarni is best known for his bowling in the Madras Test against England in 1963-64. At the end of the third day of the competition, his figures bowled against Brian Boles and Ken Barrington.
He finished with figures of 32-27-5-0 and bowled twenty-one consecutive maiden overs (131 consecutive dot balls) in a 114-minute bowling spell. Nadkarni scored 52* and 122* in the final Test of the series. It went on to become his only century in Test cricket.
The said 21 consecutive maiden overs is a record that no one can break even today. It doesn’t seem likely to crack or break anymore.
