The Indonesian Puppeters Association (Pepadi) of the former Banyumas Residency will report the preacher Khalid Basalamah related to the talk ‘masterminds repent and destroy movies’. The video went viral on social media.
Reported from Central Java, the video lecture entitled ‘Wayang Haram’ was uploaded by the Yarif.TV account. The video, which was uploaded about a year ago, has been viewed up to 45 thousand views with 2.5 thousand comments. However, this video is currently inaccessible.
At first, someone claimed to be a puppeteer and liked wayang, asking him how to repent. Khalid Basalamah asked the puppeteer to repent and destroy the puppet.
“If it’s a matter of repentance, yes, repentance of naasuha to Allah SWT with three conditions that we already know, leaving sins, regrets, and promises to Allah not to repeat them, and if he has (puppet), then it is better to destroy it, in the sense of the word it’s better to get rid of it,” said Khalid Basalamah as quoted by detikJateng from the YouTube channel, Monday (14/2/2022).
Khalid Basalamah said his statement was not offensive. Because, according to him, Islam should become a culture, not the other way around.
“We will not speak in lectures like this, not bringing down, not at all. But we must know and be aware that we are Muslims and Muslims are guided by religion. That’s why I said, the way Islam should be made a tradition and culture, don’t go back, not culture Islamized, difficult,” he said.
“If it is indeed a relic of our ancestors, maybe we can remember it first. But it doesn’t have to be done, while in Islam it is forbidden, we should leave it,” he said.
The mastermind behind Khalid Basalamah’s lecture
Pepadi, the former Banyumas residency, was furious with Khalid Basalamah’s lecture. They have no problem if the discussion is only about haram, but it’s a different story when wayang must be destroyed.
“For us, wayang is usually called bid’ah or wayang haram, sometimes we get used to it. But when there is a sentence, it should be destroyed, oh my, in terms of wayang,’a cough as loud as the earth‘ it’s already challenge war,” said the Pepadi Regional Coordinator (Korwil) of the former Banyumas residency, Bambang Barata Aji, when contacted by detikJateng, today.
Besides wayang kulit, there are many types of puppets in Indonesia. From wayang purwa, wayang golek, wayang orang, wayang beber, and so on.
Bambang, who is also the son of a senior mastermind in Banyumas or Sawan mastermind, wants to preserve the puppet culture.
“This has been a long struggle for us. It hurts to talk about wayang, my life is a big family of 13 brothers, that’s the life of my father who is a puppeteer and my grandfather is also a puppeteer. But because he loves from there and looks for food from there, you know how to say like that,” he said.
