The drawing Game Changer Banksy has raised a record amount of nearly 17 million pounds (19.8 million euros) at an auction, auction house Christie’s reports.
Proceeds from the work, previously hung in a Southampton hospital, will go to UK health care and charities.
The drawing shows a boy playing with dolls. The child leaves well-known heroes such as Batman and Spider-Man in the corner and has a nurse with a fluttering cape and mouth mask. Banksy created the work as a personal tribute to the heroes of the corona pandemic.
Exactly a year after the first British lockdown was announced, the work went under the hammer. That yielded the highest amount ever paid at auction for a Banksy, according to Christie’s. The value of the artwork had previously been estimated at 2.5 million to 3.5 million pounds (about 3 to 4 million euros).
