Banksy brings his latest drawing to London Zoo after his rhino was vandalised

Animals are taking centre stage on the streets of London. For days, Banksy, the street artist whose identity is unknown, has been flooding different parts of the British capital with all kinds of species. The latest of the murals, painted on the main shutter of the zoo, features a gorilla, who frees other animals from the enclosure, such as a seal, a parrot and other birds. A new work is full of meaning.

Rebecca Blanchard, communications director at the Zoological Society of London, has described the appearance of this latest drawing, the ninth in what appears to be a joint work popularly dubbed ‘London Zoo’, as “an incredible surprise”.

The vast majority of murals have become a focus for locals, tourists and curious people, who come to take a snapshot. However, two of these latest works have not had much luck. If a few days ago some hooded men stole in broad daylight the mural of a wolf made on a satellite dish, this Tuesday another individual with his head covered has defaced with white spray the last of the graffiti: a rhinoceros on a car abandoned on the sidewalk.

The BBC has released a video today showing the exact moment of the incident. In the recording, several people can be heard saying: “Don’t do that” and “Why did you do that?”. Pleas that the vandal ignored.

The rhino follows Sunday’s artwork – piranhas on a police sentry box – which has since been removed by the city council in order to preserve it. “We have moved the artwork to Guildhall Yard to ensure it is properly protected and open for public viewing in safety,” a City of London spokesman said on Tuesday.

Previously, there were drawings of pelicans, piranhas, a cat, a wolf, three monkeys, two elephants and a goat. With this last one, it is believed that the man from Bristol may have dressed up as a worker and allowed himself to be filmed minutes before making it.

The mysterious graffiti artist confirmed his work on his Instagram account early this afternoon.
