Banks cater to 171,000 affected entrepreneurs and consumers

Since the outbreak of the corona crisis, the Dutch banks have given financially more air to nearly 143,000 entrepreneurs and 28,000 consumers. They were granted repayments, were able to take out loans or were given more credit space. This now involves more than 11 billion euros. That is 4 billion more than two weeks ago. This is evident from an overview of the Dutch Banking Association (NVB).

Almost 129,000 companies have received deferred payments from their bank, with a total value of 2.8 billion euros. The banks also provided almost 14,000 new loans to companies. They have a total value of 8.6 billion euros. More than 3000 of these loans have been provided with a government guarantee.

According to the NVB, the need remains high for many companies. They see that the number of applications for funding is leveling off, but that could increase again later in the crisis. The banks say it seems that companies are waiting to apply for a new loan.

Entrepreneurs were previously critical of the way in which banks issue additional loans through the BMKB scheme, which is the guarantee for small and medium-sized enterprises. Banks would judge credit applications with that government guarantee too strictly.

Payment break

Banks have given consumers a ‘payment break’ for paying off their mortgage more than 18,000 times. This usually concerns a break of one to three months. More than ten thousand households were given a respite on a consumer loan. This concerns a total of 72 million euros.

Banks can not only defer consumers, but also adjust loans or make payment arrangements. According to the NVB, it is important to carefully consider what best suits the personal situation of the customer.
