A banknote of 40 guilders from the former Dutch East Indies was auctioned on Thursday for 25,830 euros. The note dates from January 19, 1921 and was issued by the Javasche Bank in Batavia, present-day Jakarta. The seller had bought the note for only 50 euro cents at a flea market.

According to Jacco Scheper, director of the auction house Heritage Auctions Europe in IJsselstein, where the auction was organized, old banknotes and other collectibles are currently extra popular due to the corona pandemic. Travel and entertainment restrictions leave collectors with money, so more is being put down for coins, notes, stamps and antiques.
But also new areas of collection sometimes bring in “bizarre prices”, says Scheper. “In January, a Pokémon picture fetched a record $300,000 at Heritage auction in Dallas. Earlier this month, a rare first edition of Anne Frank’s war diary ‘Het Achterhuis’ was hammered out for 10,000 euros at an auction house in Leiden.
