In health care in Latvia, greater focus should be placed on prevention and promotion of public health, representatives of the Bank of Latvia (LB) and the Ministry of Health (MOH) acknowledged during a meeting on Thursday.
Today, the Minister of Health Hosams Abu Meri (JV) met with the President of the Republic of Lithuania Mārtis Kazaks to discuss economic issues and opportunities for cooperation that would contribute to the improvement of public health.
Taking into account the economic and demographic challenges and other important influencing factors, it can be seen that structural improvements are needed in health care, the participants of the conversation concluded.
Long-term lack of funding in the industry is only one of the problems. The second, no less important set of questions is related to the efficiency and transparency of the use of already allocated funds. Increasing funding in health care is very important, but structural changes must be made more actively in order to achieve the set goals of access to health services, says the Ministry of Health.
The representatives of the Bank of Latvia and the Ministry of Health agreed that a much greater focus should be placed on prevention, because the expected healthy life expectancy of the population is a concern – the years that characterize the phase of the population’s life when they can productively engage in the labor market and make a significant contribution to the economy and society. In Latvia, this indicator is one of the worst among the European Union member states, significantly reducing the performance of the national economy.
“The experience of previous years shows that increasing the funding of the industry gradually, in a small amount, does not meet the expectations of the population and the medical staff for improvements in the industry as a whole. We can see that even with next year’s funding increase within the limits of possibilities, the changes in services, tariffs and the increased salary of doctors do not bring sufficient benefit to the survivors – patients. We need to think much more actively about the mechanisms for controlling the effectiveness and efficiency of the use of funding and the introduction of targeted prevention measures,” said the Minister of Health, adding that the health of the population plays an important role in the development of the national economy and economy.
