Bank of Ireland Apologizes for Error Allowing Customers to Withdraw Excessive Funds

The Bank of Ireland had to apologise, and stressed that anyone who withdrew more than they had in their account “will have to return the money”

“Run, the bank is giving away money.” This must have been the word of mouth that spread yesterday in several cities in Ireland where an error in the Bank of Ireland’s computer system allowed customers who had no money in their accounts to access funds, withdrawing money which – in reality – they did not have.

In no time at all, on the evening of August 15, huge queues were forming at ATMs in Dublin, Limerick, Dundalk and other parts of the country.

Some people have been able to withdraw a thousand euros — even though the daily withdrawal limit is 500 euros.

The incident is a major embarrassment for the bank which last month reported half-yearly profits of more than 1 billion euros. The institute, in a statement, stressed that any amount of money withdrawn from accounts in which there are no funds will be considered a debt and essentially treated as an unauthorized overdraft. A statement that was also disseminated on social networks, but which has not dissuaded customers from rushing to the ATMs. We are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible and apologize to customers for any inconvenience caused. We would like to remind customers that if they transfer or withdraw funds, even beyond their normal limits, these funds will be debited from their account. Whilst we understand that customers may not be able to check their balance at this time, they should not withdraw or transfer funds if they are likely to be in the red,” Bank of Ireland explained.

It is not the first time that the ATM withdrawal system has gone haywire, it had already happened in June but, in that case, people had not had access to funds they did not have in their accounts. The Institute’s managers have assured that an investigation will be conducted into the incident, with the involvement of the Central Bank.
