Bank Indonesia Admits Hacked, Affected by “Ransomware” Attacks, Critical Data Ensured Safe All

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – A post on the Twitter platform indicates an attempted cyberattack in the form of: ransomware targeting Bank Indonesia (WITH A).

The upload was made by an account named DarkTracer on Thursday (20/1/2022) yesterday. In his tweet, DarkTracer uploaded a screenshot of the file containing the data that was successfully covered by ransomware Conti.

In response to the upload, BI confirmed that there was an attack attempt ransomware in the last month.

However, the central bank ensures that no strategic data is affected or hacked.

“Bank Indonesia was aware of a hacking attempt in the form of ransomware last month. No data was hacked,” said Head of the BI Communications Department, Erwin Haryono, to Kompas.com, Friday (21/1/2022).

Erwin said BI had conducted an assessment of the attack. The central bank has also carried out recovery, auditing, and mitigation so that these attacks do not recur by implementing the established IT disruption mitigation protocol.

“Bank Indonesia continues to strive to improve the resilience of information systems to prevent cyber attacks of any kind, including hacking attacks that can disrupt the implementation of Bank Indonesia’s duties,” he said.

BI ensures the security of payment system services

In order to ensure the security of payment system services going forward, Erwin added, BI will always carry out tests on all of its infrastructure.

In addition, BI is said to continue to coordinate with payment system participants to ensure optimal payment system activities.

“Bank Indonesia ensures that Bank Indonesia’s operational services remain under control in supporting the community’s economic activities,” said Erwin.
