Rome (CNN) A 37-year-old man in Turin, Italy, has been hailed for miraculously catching a 3-year-old girl who fell from the fifth floor of an apartment building.

The man in charge is Mattia Aguzzi, a bank clerk. Around 11 a.m. local time on Thursday, he recalled hearing a man screaming from upstairs in an apartment building while walking with his girlfriend to a bakery in Turin.

“The man was screaming when he saw a little girl leaning over the railing. She leaned forward and over the railing, and she held onto it with only her arms and her legs were hanging in the air.” Aguzzi, who was treated for minor injuries himself, told CNN affiliate Sky24 in front of the hospital.

Aguzzi said he shouted to stop the girl, but when he realized he couldn’t hear him, he calculated how he would fall and stood under her.

“I saw her fall and I stepped over, closed my eyes and hoped everything was fine. I stepped in to soften the impact and we both fell to the ground.”

“At first I didn’t feel alive, but then my child started crying and I breathed a sigh of relief.”

When her parents realized what had happened, she rushed out and the girl was taken to the hospital by ambulance. Her parents looked shocked, but Aguzzi said the girl was okay.

The mayor of Turin announced that Aguzzi would be commended, and Italian Prime Minister Meloni also expressed his gratitude.

But Aguzzi commented, “I just did what I had to do without thinking about it.” She said her extra pounds helped her, joking, “Now I don’t have anyone telling me I should lose a little weight.”
