Bangladesh’s prime minister resigns and leaves the country

Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned on Monday and left the country with her sister, Sheikh Rehana, as anti-government protests that began last month and have already left hundreds dead in the country continue to rage.

Hasina, who has offered to speak to protesters on several occasions to try to find solutions to the crisis in Bangladesh, has submitted her resignation to President Mohammad Shahabuddin at Bangabhaban (the official residence of the head of state) at 12 noon (local time), as reported by the Channel i television channel.

His departure from the country comes shortly after thousands of protesters, who have taken to the streets again despite the curfew imposed by the authorities in an attempt to reduce tensions, have stormed Ganabhaban, the prime minister’s residence, where looting is taking place.

Sources close to the matter have told Bangladeshi television that Hasina has crossed the border on board a helicopter to travel to the Indian state of West Bengal for security reasons.
