Bangladesh opposition leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was charged with murder on Sunday. A police officer was killed during a violent protest on Saturday. Alamgir’s party organized the demonstrations.
Alamgir has been charged along with at least 164 members of the Bangladesh National Party (BNP). He was arrested on Sunday. If convicted, he could face the death penalty.
More than 100,000 people took to the streets of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, on Saturday to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. An officer was beaten by a crowd with, among other things, a bat and died. A hundred more, including police officers and journalists, were injured.
It is still restless in the capital on Sunday. The opposition party BNP has called for new protests. They accuse Prime Minister Hasina of human rights violations and election fraud, among other things.
