At least 27 people were killed and dozens injured in riots in Bangladesh today, as police used tear gas and stun guns to disperse tens of thousands of protesters calling for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to step down.
The riots forced the government to cut off the internet.
It is the biggest test of political endurance for the government since violent protests erupted in January when Hasina was elected to her fourth consecutive term as prime minister.
These elections were boycotted by the main opposition party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
Last month, at least 150 people were killed and thousands injured, with around 10,000 arrested, when riots erupted from demonstrations led by student groups protesting restrictions on public sector recruitment.
