DHAKA, June 20 (Xinhua) — Bangladesh has formally applied to join the BRICS, an abbreviation for five emerging economies comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The application was submitted following a meeting between Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa in the Swiss city of Geneva on June 14.

According to the Bangladeshi Dhaka Tribune, the petition was presented by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during the meeting. The 2023 BRICS Summit, scheduled to be held in South Africa in August, may cover discussions on recruiting new members.
