Discrepancies with Reuter & Co.?

That came as a bit of a surprise: After the 2-1 home win against Greuther Fürth in the last game of the season, Coach Weinzierl announced that he would not be extending his contract with FC Augsburg.

Markus Weinzierl is leaving FC Augsburg – for him it is already the second departure from the Swabians after he decided to switch to FC Schalke 04 in 2016 after four years in office. In April 2021 he returned to his old place of work and held the class again.

Problems with the management of the club?

The 47-year-old first wanted to tell the players about his end at FCA after the home win against Fürth: “It’s the right decision not to have any more talks. I waited for my players in the center circle because I told them that it was mine last game was”. The Straubinger then announced his farewell to the Swabians on the Sky TV channel – according to his own statement, he had made the decision just a day earlier. The club management around Stefan Reuter only found out about Weinzierl’s decision through the interview, which suggests slight discrepancies between the parties.

Rumors about a possible successor

He lacks the basis and satisfaction for another engagement at Augsburg, although Weinzierl admitted: “It wasn’t planned that way, my heart hurts too.” The first rumors of a possible successor are already circulating on the internet: Shortly after the announcement of the decision, “Bild” brought Enrico Maaßen from Borussia Dortmund II into play as a potential successor. The 38-year-old is under contract with the black and yellow third division team until 2024.
