Banco Santander, through its land subsidiary LandCo, has donated nearly 500,000 square meters of wetlands to the municipality of Alcudia, in Mallorca, to develop a project to recover the Estany des Ponts wetland promoted by WWF Spain and which It will also have the participation of other entities and institutions such as the Government or the UIB. This area has been degraded for many years with continuous dumping of waste and uncontrolled uses, Banco Santander reported in a press release. Last March, the Alcudia city council, together with WWF and the UIB, presented the ‘RestaurAlcudia’ project to the call for grants from the Biodiversity Foundation, dependent on the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, for the promotion of actions aimed at the restoration of river ecosystems and the reduction of the risk of flooding in river environments, which includes the Maristany and Estany des Ponts wetlands, where the donated land is located. The ‘RestaurAlcudia’ project aims to renaturalise the urban wetlands of Maristany and Estany des Ponts, which form part of the Badia d’Alcúdia ecological corridor. The actions that will be carried out include new flood zones, revegetation and renaturation, removal of invasive vegetation and waste, removal of barriers, expansion of drainage channels, among other actions.
