REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — High blood pressure or hypertension can reach dangerous levels. In fact, it can lead to heart problems and increase a person’s risk of having a stroke.

Because it is often asymptomatic, high blood pressure needs to be watched out more. There are ways to reduce the risk, with some lifestyle changes.

Quoted from page Daily Record, Monday (4/9/2023), choosing healthier snacks into the daily menu can help reduce the risk of hypertension. One of these was revealed in a 2022 study conducted by scientists in the Netherlands.

Study findings say, consumption of foods high in potassium can help eliminate the impact of high sodium levels which can cause high blood pressure. Research shows that it works especially well with women.

Exposure to the study has been published in the European Heart Journal. The team analyzed data from nearly 25,000 British people. Study participants who regularly ate potassium-rich foods like bananas were shown to have a 13 percent less chance of having a heart attack or stroke.

Apart from bananas, consumption of various other foods has also been shown to help, such as green vegetables, salmon, tuna, nuts, apricots and avocados. The researchers suggest that type of food is chosen as a snack when you want snacking.

The symptoms of hypertension are often unclear. However, there are certain factors that can be observed. According to the British Heart Foundation, risk factors for hypertension include being over 65 years old, and having a family history of high blood pressure.

In addition, other risk factors include smoking, drinking alcohol, eating too much salt, not eating enough fruits and vegetables, not getting enough exercise, and being overweight. People who live in disadvantaged areas are more at risk of developing high blood pressure. So do people of African or Caribbean descent.
