Street artists are not allowed to perform in the city center for the time being. Mayor Halsema has decided that in response to the increasing crowds in the city.

The ban will apply until October 31. The mayor believes that the crowds in the Burgwallen area were so great that a safe distance between passers-by was not possible and that ‘more visitors are expected to come to Amsterdam in the coming summer holiday period, which means keeping a safe distance throughout center is under pressure. ‘
At performances on Dam Square, among others, the attendees do not keep enough distance from each other, the mayor continues to write. “Street performers and musicians usually cannot take measures to keep their audience at a sufficient distance from each other or to separate audience flows, because their entertainment is aimed at passers-by who (long-term) hang out around the artist.”
The mayor further writes that the importance of the artists in the city is recognized, but that the importance of protecting public health outweighs.

Earlier today it was already announced that the coming days additional measures are taken because of the increasing crowds in the city center. There will be extra checks in places that attract a lot of public. Enforcers and traffic controllers are also deployed to guide visitor flows. One-way traffic will be set up on the Red Light District tonight and tomorrow evening from 6 p.m. If it gets too busy, alleys can be closed temporarily to visitors.
