Why do artists like Bob Dylan or Rin ban cell phones?
There are many reasons for a ban: Some artists find it disturbing when they look into the audience and only see smartphones. On the one hand, contact with the fans is lost, and on the other hand, some complain, cell phone screens and flash lights ruin the intimacy of concerts.
Rin also sees it that way, he unequivocally calls his current tour with Schmyt the “No Phones Allowed Tour”. All fans must cover their cell phone cameras at the concerts.
In an Instagram video, he explains his decision as follows: Viewers shouldn’t be under pressure to post everything on social media. He himself would like to play new songs without them being completely available online. The comments under his post: mostly positive.

Bob Dylan, Madonna and Alicia Keys have also banned recordings of their concerts. “On the other hand, there are also artists who play with this circumstance – i.e. with the camera of the concertgoers, so to speak,” observes Alexander Endreß, who heads the music business course at the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg. “Dua Lipa, for example, is known for this.”
Record sales, sold-out stadiums – the market for concert tickets for big stars is booming. Nevertheless, many clubs have recently had to close and small acts have had to cancel tours. Why? Do big players rob the small ones of their chances?July 15, 2024 | 16:44 minutes
Ban on cell phones at concerts: How is it enforced?
While on Rin and Schmyt’s tour only the cameras were covered with stickers, visitors to Bob Dylan’s current tour had to lock their smartphones in a magnetic case. This could only be opened in certain areas. “Buyers were informed about the cell phone ban when they bought the tickets,” says the organizer Live Nation when asked by ZDFheute – there were no complaints from visitors, many even welcomed the regulation.
Anyone who doesn’t use their cell phone at Metalband Tool will be thrown out by security personnel. But there is also a gentler way: bands like Coldplay or AnnenMayKantereit want their fans to put away their cell phones for at least one song. In the vast majority of cases, says the Federal Association of the Concert and Event Industry, the audience respects the artists’ wishes.
What are the reasons for a cell phone ban in the club?
The protection of privacy and the protection of personal rights are among the reasons why clubs also ban cell phones from their guests. Many people find it unpleasant to find pictures or videos of themselves drunk in the club on the Internet the next day, according to the website of a club in Stuttgart. Hamburg even has its own cellphone-free event series: it’s called “nofomo” and its motto is “celebrate together offline”. In Berlin, photo bans are particularly widespread in techno clubs.Should clubs be recognized, protected and supported by the state as cultural sites nationwide? September 11th, 2024 | 24:56 minutes
How common are cell phone bans in clubs and concerts?
The Clubkombinat Hamburg is currently talking about a slightly increasing number of club events without smartphones. But both in Hamburg and in the rest of Germany there are only a few locations that have banned photos and videos, which the hotel and restaurant association Dehoga ZDFheute also confirms. It’s a similar situation at concerts at the moment. Derek von Krogh from the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg doubts “that a particular variant will ever become widespread across the board.” The needs of the artists are too different. His colleague Alexander Endreß adds that newcomers in particular would benefit from photos and videos from their own fans on social media, and even depend on them.
Whether cell phones will eventually disappear at concerts will probably depend on whether a social dynamic develops – filming will at some point be socially sanctioned, says von Krogh. This is not yet foreseeable.
Down after attending a concert?
