Bamboo as a Sustainable and Renewable Energy Source: Exploring its Potential for Bioethanol and Biogas Production

Jakarta

Bamboo, which has been known as a plant rich in benefits, turns out to have the potential to become a source of New, Renewable Energy (EBT). How to use it?

A new article published in the journal GCB Bioenergy explore why bamboo can be a source of renewable energy that is sustainable and environmentally friendly.

In fact, the exploration mentioned that bamboo could function as an alternative to fossil fuels.

Can Be Bioethanol to Biogas Products

Quoted from SciTechDailythe author reveals the ability of bamboo to grow quickly, the ability of bamboo to absorb carbon dioxide, and the ability of bamboo to contribute large amounts of oxygen to the environment.

The researchers explained various processes such as fermentation and pyrolysis that can be carried out to convert bamboo raw materials into bioethanol, biogas and other bioenergy products.

Limited tools are currently available to select the most appropriate bamboo species for various bioenergy production processes.

“We conducted a review of energy conversion methods for bamboo biomass and found that bioethanol and biochar were the main products obtained (from bamboo),” said co-author Zhiwei Liang, from the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

“As the chemical composition of bamboo varies among different species, future research efforts should focus on collecting more extensive quantitative data to select advantageous species to minimize the time and cost of pre-treating the biomass,” he added.

An Efficient Conversion Process Is Required

The researchers also explained that in their paper, they provided an overview of the potential use of bamboo resources in value-added energy conversion technologies and energy systems.

Studies of bioenergy products produced using methods different from bamboo show that biochar and bioethanol are currently the most promising targets for bamboo biomass production.

“This paper emphasizes the need to focus on efficient pretreatment and conversion methods, as well as selecting bamboo species with high cellulose content, to optimize the energy, environmental and economic benefits of bamboo biomass utilization,” said the researcher.

Researchers underscore the importance of utilizing bamboo biomass as a promising solution to the growing energy demand and waste disposal problems.

According to them, future research is needed which should focus on developing more efficient and cost-effective methods of pre-treatment and conversion.
