From today until June 16, the large-scale annual international military exercise “Baltops 23” will take place in the Baltic Sea region, the National Armed Forces (NBS) informed.

“Baltops 23” is one of the most ambitious in the Northern European region, and their goal this year is to continue to improve the mutual cooperation and operational compatibility of units of various types of forces and classes of weapons, not only in NATO, but also together with the partner countries of the alliance.
During the joint exercises, the participants will demonstrate their readiness to provide collective defense in the Baltic region, thereby strengthening regional security and promoting deterrence.
19 NATO member states and one partner country, 50 ships, more than 45 aircraft and 6,000 soldiers will take part in the exercise.
The training members will be the USA, Belgium, Denmark, France, Estonia, Italy, Canada, Latvia, Great Britain, Lithuania, Norway, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Finland, Spain, Turkey, Germany, and the partner country – Sweden.
The national armed forces will be represented in these exercises by the Air Force, the Navy, including the Diver Team and the ship “Virsaitis”, the Mechanized Infantry Brigade of the Land Forces and the National Guard.
Starting from June 5, in the territorial waters of Latvia and in the area of responsibility of the 4th Kurzeme Brigade of the National Guard, including the coast of Kurzeme, various tactical operations will be practiced with the involvement of ships, aircraft and armored vehicles of the allied countries, including the landing of a sea landing.
During the active phase of the land operation, on June 6, in Vārve parish of Ventspils region, a sea landing operation will take place from the British amphibious assault ship “HMS Albion” and the Italian amphibious ship “San Marco”. On the other hand, in the Baltic Sea, on June 6, at the Škeede military training ground, there will be a live shooting, as well as maneuvers of the US marines.
The first international training “Baltops” took place in the Baltic Sea in 1971.
During the military exercises, starting from June 5, intensive movement of Latvian and allied soldiers and military equipment will take place in the Kurzeme region, including the Kurzeme coast, and military aircraft will fly in Latvian airspace.
The national armed forces call on the citizens of Kurzeme to treat the military exercises on the territory of the country with understanding, as they are aimed at improving the defense capabilities of our country and strengthening regional security.
