US actor Michael K. Williams died in early September at the age of only 54. Series junkies knew him from Boardwalk Empire, Hap and Leonard, The Night Of, Community, Lovecraft Country and of course from The Wire. The legendary HBO series offered Williams the role of his life, the modern gunslinger Omar Little, the most feared man in Baltimore.
In memory of the unforgettable TV character, whom Barack Obama once named as his favorite TV character of all time, the Baltimore Ravens, the hometown football team of “The Wire“Now come up with a touching gesture of remembrance. Omar’s famous whistle was played at the entry of the team. The melody comes from the nursery rhyme “The Farmer in the Dell“.
If you heard the whistle in the series, it was clear that Omar would show up and clean up the streets. It now sounds ghostly as the opening music of the Baltimore Ravens, who have published their tribute to Williams on YouTube. In the comments you can find numerous demands that the Omar whistle should now be a permanent part of the Ravens warm-up show. Whether that happens remains to be seen …
The Emmy Awards also saw numerous accolades for Williams’ life’s work. The actor was also posthumously represented in the race for best supporting actor in a drama series – through his appearance in Lovecraft Country. In the end, however, Tobias Menzies won for The Crown, who also dedicated his award to Williams.
