Baltic Young Curators Program at Performa Biennial: Exploring Performative History and Artistic Archives

Visual art and performances meet at the “Performa” biennial, and this year new works by artists such as Marcel Dzama, Nora Turato, Franz Erhard Walther and others will be shown there. “Performa” has been an important career stepping stone for many curators and producers of art events for almost 20 years. The winners of the Baltic Young Curators Program must work with materials from the “Performa” archives, delve into the performative history of conceptual art, architecture, protests and dissidence, as well as participate in the implementation of biennial projects and the organization of events.

One new curator was chosen from each Baltic state. Tīna Pētersone participates in the project from Latvia. She currently works as an independent curator. She received a master’s degree in curatorial specialization from Goldsmiths University of London. In 2021, Tina participated in the founding of the TUR art space and the creation of its exhibition program. Currently, the “Zuzeum” art center is viewing the exhibition “Sight field” curated by Tina.

Aiste Joninaite, an art historian and curator who obtained a master’s degree from the University of London, was chosen from Lithuania to participate in the program. Aiste’s research interests are related to the convergence of political participation and dance theory, with a special focus on Eastern Europe and Latin America.

On the other hand, Estonia is represented by Kerly Ritval, a curator and art critic whose wide range of interests includes contemporary art, performance and architecture. Studied at the Estonian Academy of Arts, but gained professional experience at the Estonian Architecture Museum, Konda Center, Listvaal Gallery (Reykjavik) and the Estonian Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale.

The project was initiated by the Estonian Contemporary Art Development Center together with the “Performa” biennial, and was implemented together with the Latvian Contemporary Art Center and the “Rupert” art center in Lithuania. The selection of the participants of the program was made by the executive producer of “Performa” Esa Nickle (Esa Nickle) together with the curator Defne Ayas (Defne Ayas), LCCA director Solvita Kres, Viktorija Śiaulyté from the art center “Rupert” and Karin Laansoo from Estonia Contemporary Art Development Center and “Kai” Art Center.

“Performa” Baltic curators program is supported by the Baltic Culture Foundation and the Ministry of Culture of Estonia.
