Europe must join forces to oppose any attempt to undermine peace and stability in the region, the Saeima Press Service said in a statement adopted by the Presidium of the Baltic Assembly (BA).
“Russia has tried in various ways to divide Europe, to instill fear in the people of Europe and to threaten several European countries,” a statement signed today by the BA Bureau said.
The BA Presidium emphasizes that Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova and the Baltic States face daily misinformation, cyber-attacks, various threats and other forms of aggression against Russia. “They need the support of the European Union and its leaders more than ever. We believe in European solidarity and the ability to protect the people of our countries,” the statement said.
According to BA President Jānis Vucāns (ZZS), parliamentarians are closely following the security situation in Ukraine and are concerned about Russia’s attempts to destabilize security in Europe. A statement by the BA Bureau on Ukraine and the European security crisis called on European leaders to take appropriate steps to support Ukraine and to do their utmost to reduce the threat of a military conflict between Russia and Europe.
“We will continue to call for political, military and financial support to ensure Ukraine’s security, and to reiterate to European leaders that Russia’s military maneuvers at the country’s borders not only pose a security crisis in Ukraine but also pose a serious threat to security in Europe as a whole,” in a statement expressing support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
In 2022, Latvia will hold the presidency of BA. BA is an institution of co-operation between the parliaments of Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania.
The United States has reportedly estimated that Russia has drawn some 130,000 troops from Ukraine’s border and suggests it may launch a new, larger-scale invasion of Ukraine. Despite this concentration of forces, Russia says it does not intend to attack Ukraine and accuses the West of causing panic.
The West has announced that Russia will face extensive economic sanctions if it intends to attack Ukraine. The United States has expressed concern that Moscow intends to create an excuse to invade Ukraine.
