“Baltais laukums” in front of the Latvian National Opera will invite you to relax and enjoy culture / Article

Giving Rigans and guests of the city the opportunity to experience the opera and ballet again, from July 21 the Latvian National Opera and Ballet (LNOB) building will have an environmental object “White Square” in the forecourt, where it will be possible to experience , LNOB representatives informed.

With the environmental object, the Latvian National Opera and Ballet wants to continue to mark the opera square as a place accessible to all, this time – through scenographic experience. According to the LNOB, the object is made of various aluminum and steel constructions of performance decorations – stairs, platforms, frames, etc., thus emphasizing not only the direct connection with the Latvian National Opera stage and performances, but also aspects of sustainability and resource reuse.

“Baltais laukums” was created in cooperation with architect Zani Teteri-Šulcis, designer Beatrice Dzērvi and the rest of the team of the architects’ office “OpenAD”. It will be a daily open space for spectators and every passer-by, where you can take refuge from the heat, refill drinking water, charge electrical appliances, have a meal, work, connect a bicycle, use the Internet and spend time meaningfully learning and experiencing opera and ballet.

“This summer, the parts of the road that are invisible in everyday life come to light, which invite us to think about the hidden or dormant potential not only in each of us, but in society as a whole, as well as in the objects we have created,” says Zane Tetere-Šulce. “If we can find a new application for forgotten scaffolding, we still have a lot of opportunities.

So often we reject opportunities because “there is no time”, fear or it is easier to stay with one without accepting new ideas, opinions and lifestyles. But what could happen if we played with the limits of our imagination? ”

The created object allows passers-by on the one hand to get to the stage on their own, but on the other hand to see what usually remains hidden from the visitors during the performance – to look inside the scene.

“Baltais laukums” tells about the boundaries – the stage and the stage, the visible and the invisible, “the authors admit,

“it also gives an idea of the enormous scale of opera and ballet scenography, which is not always possible to grasp from the audience’s point of view.”

On the evenings of July 21 and 22, spectators will be able to watch the 5th International Baltic Ballet Competition taking place here at the Latvian National Opera on the screens located at the environmental object, including live follow-up to the award ceremony and the concert. On July 23 and 24, the recording of the concert “Opera Star Summer” at the end of the LNOB season, which took place on July 4, will be shown.
