Ballot boxes open in Poland, trial of fire for the EU and for the sovereigns

Ballot boxes opened in Poland for presidential elections, initially scheduled for May, but then postponed for the coronavirus epidemic. The challenge is all between the liberal and pro-European Mayor of Warsaw Rafael Trzaskowski, and the populist and Trumpian head of state Andrej Duda, in a match on the thread that will decide the future of the country.

According to a latest poll by Ipsos Duda, back from the lightning visit to the United States last Wednesday, where he collected the support of the White House – with Trump who promised part of the American troops that will be withdrawn from Germany – would be favored both to the first turn, (with 40% of the preferences compared to 27% of the main opponent), both at the second. It is practically certain that on July 12 there will be a ballot, and there the outgoing president supported by Kakzynski’s PIS could establish himself with 47% against 45%, according to estimates. Duda is therefore recovering, compared to the detection of just two days before, which indicated Trzaskowski winning.

Political analysts see this duel – which occurs in any case while Covid-19 is still active in the country – as the moment of confrontation between two very different visions of the future of the country. Poland could either go back to following EU standards, or continue on the path of conflict with Brussels: as happened with the violations of the autonomy of the judiciary. The seats will close at 9pm Italian time.
