The Easter holiday has arrived and residents of one Cork housing estate are eager to get into the festive spirit. An Easter egg hunt was held in the Heathfield housing estate in Ballincollig. The event was organized by a group of mothers who reside in the estate, with over 85 children participating in the hunt. The hunt was an opportunity for children and parents to meet and interact with their neighbors, as the estate is relatively new.
The event showcased a community coming together to bring joy to the children, with the Easter Bunny making an appearance and Sunny’s ice cream van serving treats. One of the parents in the community set up a WhatsApp group to help the new members of the community integrate with other residents. This WhatsApp group facilitated meeting up amongst the neighbors, an excellent way to get to know one another and create lasting friendships.
One of the event organizers, Reka Ferencz, expressed that the Easter egg hunt should help develop friendships between families. She highlighted that with so many children present in the neighborhood, it’s ideal to get to know each other and build community ties. Ferencz said, “There are so many children here, who will definitely play with each other in a couple of years’ time, so it’s great to get to know your neighbors and know the community before your children are already playing together.”
The event drew inspiration from Ferencz’s belief that egg hunts are a charming way of bringing communities together. She explained that “I’ve never been on an egg hunt myself, but I always thought it was an endearing thing to do, so I was like, ‘okay, I can make one myself for my neighbors and the community.’ A few other people jumped on board, then a few other moms, and it just kicked off from there, and we never thought it would get as big as it did.”
The event was inclusive and brought together the community, showcasing the importance of creating a friendly and welcoming environment for new residents. It also gave residents an opportunity to interact and build connections, something that is often seen in more established communities but is indeed just as important in new neighborhoods.
