Ballet Manager Ingrid Lorentzen calls for change as bigger stages see fewer female choreographers.

Men are responsible for most of the choreography in classical ballet. In the National Ballet, a major turnaround is underway to improve the gender balance.

The young, Canadian choreographer Emma Portner’s “Some Girls Don’t Turn” is shown in Oslo as part of the performance “Portner/Kylián/Balanchine”. Portner also receives orders from several major international ballet companies.

– Change is necessary.

So says ballet director Ingrid Lorentzen at Den Norske Opera & Ballett. She wants to provide equal opportunities for choreographers, regardless of gender. And she wants them on the main stage.
