With the commissioning of the plants, up to 200 new jobs will be created in each of the regions in a rapidly growing future industry. Not only consumers are currently increasingly looking for sustainable packaging alternatives, manufacturers are also increasingly relying on beverage cans. Both of these are driving the demand for aluminum packaging.
The new British plant is to be built in Northamptonshire (SEGRO Park Kettering Gateway) in central England. The first groundbreaking is expected to take place later this year. The proposed facility will be Ball’s third manufacturing facility in the UK and will complement capacity at the existing Milton Keynes and Wakefield sites. It will supply aluminum cans for domestic customers and their growing variety of products – including hard seltzer, wines, ready-to-drink cocktails and various waters with and without flavor.
Beers and energy drinks in particular are generating strong market growth in Russia. In order to be able to meet this demand in the future, Ball is planning to build a plant in Ulyanovsk in western Russia. With this location, the total number of production facilities in Russia increases to four. The other plants are Naro-Fominsk in the Moscow region, Vesvolozhsk in the St. Petersburg region and Argayash in the Chelyabinsk region.
“We are acting now to support our customers in the UK and Russia,” said Carey Causey, President, Ball Beverage Packaging EMEA. “The demand for aluminum packaging that can be recycled again and again without any loss of quality is increasing in many beverage categories. Consumer behavior has also changed – not least because of the pandemic: people are enjoying their favorite drinks more and more often at home or on the go; and they are specifically looking for beverages in packaging that are actually recycled and contribute to a true circular economy. ”
The aluminum can is the most commonly recycled packaging in the world. In Europe, the recycling rate is currently 76 percent, in Germany more than 99 percent of all cans are recycled.
