The ball scored by Argentine footballer Diego Maradona in the 1986 FIFA World Cup quarter-final against England was auctioned for €2.3 million, the auction took place at Graham Budd Auctions. The starting price of the ball was 570,000 euros, while the real price of the lot was estimated at between 2.8 and 3.4 million euros.
Diego Maradona’s goal in the match against England was called “the hand of God”. Argentina won that match 2-1 and then went on to win the World Cup. In May of this year, the Diego Maradona shirt, in which he scored a goal in a match against England, was sold at Sotheby`s for 9.3 million euros. It was sold by former England midfielder Steve Hodge. He swapped shirts with Diego Maradona 36 years ago. It became the most expensive athlete’s jersey sold at auction.
Diego Maradona died on November 25, 2020 of a heart attack at the age of 60. In addition to Argentine clubs, Diego Maradona played for the Italian club Napoli, the Spanish clubs Sevilla and Barcelona. He played 113 matches for Argentina, scoring 50 goals.
