A fisherman’s son with fashion in his blood

Cristobal Balenciaga was born on January 21, 1895 in Spain in the family of a fisherman and seamstress. The boy grew up watching his mother sew dresses, and often went with her to clients for fitting. It is no wonder that at the age of 12 he began to learn this trade and became an apprentice of a local tailor.

One of the teenager’s clients was the Marquise de Casa Torres, an aristocrat living in his hometown, who paid for his move to Madrid. There he continued to learn the art of creating costumes.

Already at the age of 24, in 1919, he had managed to open his first fashion store in the city of San Sebastián and soon expanded his activities, opening salons in Barcelona and Madrid as well.
