The revolver turned out to be loaded with sharp ammunition, and Souza himself was hit and wounded by the shot that was fired.
Souza has now explained himself about the incident and says in a written statement that he stood behind Hutchins and looked over the film photographer’s shoulder “when he heard something that resembled the sound of a whip and then a loud bang”.
Hutchins held on to her stomach and stumbled backwards before lying on the ground. Souza then saw that he was bleeding from one shoulder, according to court documents released by the Santa Fe County sheriff.
Baldwin was given the revolver by the film’s director Dave Hall just before the fatal shot was fired.
According to court documents, Halls allegedly picked up the weapon from a trolley and went to Baldwin. Then he allegedly shouted “cold gun” to say it was harmless. However, the revolver was loaded with sharp ammunition, investigators have found.
