One of the most anticipated RPGs of the year, Baldur’s Gate 3 is out of Early Access next week. In conversation with IGN Swen Vincke, founder and head of the Belgian studio Larian, spoke about what the team will do next.
According to Vincke, after the release of version 1.0, the developers will go on vacation, and after some time they will return to their most successful series – Divinity: Original Sin.
«[Divinity: Original Sin] is our own universe, so at some point we will definitely return to it, the leader said. — Baldur’s Gate 3 needs to be finished first, then take a break for a creative reset. 400 people put their soul into this game, brought all the best of themselves into it. It means a lot.”
Kickstarter-funded RPG Divinity: Original Sin exited Steam Early Access in 2014 and became the fastest-selling RPG in the studio’s history. Divinity: Original Sin 2, which received funding from the same venue, reached version 1.0 in 2017 and surpassed the original both in press estimates and in sales (more than 1 million copies in two months). The second part is still gathering players on Steam (peak online over the past 24 hours – 11 021). Both belong to the Divinity franchise, which was born in 2002 with the release of Divine Divinity.
In another recent interview for the Dropped Frames podcast, Vincke gave advice for the first playthrough of Baldur’s Gate 3. The director warned users against choosing one of the characters with a unique backstory (Origin Character) instead of the one created by themselves.
“We have added such heroes for repeated playthroughs, Winke explained. — It is better to take your character and study companions. When you play through the game again, they will be revealed for real. However, you can do whatever you want, but remember – the system with characters that have a backstory is designed so that you can put a camera in the head of one of them. First you need to decide which one.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is leaving Early Access Steam August 3, almost three years after the release of the original version. The game will launch on PlayStation 5 on September 6, with Xbox Series X and S versions planned for release at a later date.
