Baldur’s Gate 3 Creative Director Josh Sawyer Discusses Biggest Problem with D&D 5E System

Fallout: New Vegas, Pentiment and Pillars of Eternity creative director Josh Sawyer continues to discuss Baldur’s Gate 3. This time, the famous game designer spoke about what he considers the game’s biggest problem. As you might guess (well, yes, it’s written in the title), the developer is most irritated by the framework into which the D&D system has driven the title:

This will come as no surprise, but I believe that 5E itself is one of the biggest gameplay stumbling blocks because it complicates an already complex and cluttered user interface. The most interesting things in the game are not 5E or even D&D, but the mechanics of Larian itself.

That being said, I still feel like the UI is clunky and I’ll never like the camera. There are places where the camera feels good, but when it doesn’t work well (i.e. the level design doesn’t interact with it), it’s very frustrating.

Comments to Josh pointed out that D&D 5th Edition “has done a great job of making the tabletop experience more accessible and modular.” Sawyer agreed, but noted that we are talking about tabletop games, while in a CRPG all these mechanics do not work the best.
