Baldur’s Gate 3 Coming to Xbox Series X/S: Compromise Reached for Split-Screen Functionality

The Xbox version of Baldur’s Gate 3 has long been stuck in a kind of developer hell. Larian was unable to achieve stable gaming on a split screen – also called “split-screen” – for the Series S edition, but now the developer has entered into a compromise to ensure launch on Xbox this year.

Games should basically work exactly the same on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, but Microsoft is stretching the rules for Baldur’s Gate 3.

Via X (formerly Twitter) studio head Swen Vincke told that Baldur’s Gate 3 is coming to Xbox Series X/S sometime later this year. To make that happen, it was decided, with Xbox boss Phil Spencer’s blessing, that the Series S version won’t come with split-screen functionality.

– Very pleased to confirm that, after a meeting with Phil Spencer yesterday, we have found a solution that will allow us to bring Baldur’s Gate 3 to Xbox players this year, something we have been working on for some time, Vincke said and continued:

– All the improvements are in place, with split-screen co-op for Series X. Series S will not have split-screen play, but will also include cross-save and shared progress between Steam and Xbox Series.

Microsoft requires that games work exactly the same on both Series X and Series S. Exactly why the company is stretching the rules for Baldur’s Gate 3 did not emerge from Vincke’s statement, but given the game’s success it is perhaps not so surprising.

The role-playing game has impressed players and reviewers all over the world, and on both Opencritic and Metacritic it sits as one of the best games of all time. Our own Øystein Furevik was among those who allowed themselves to be impressed.

– Baldur’s Gate 3 is a large, comprehensive and beautiful role-playing game. It is one of the best games I have played in many years, and it has single-handedly made me want to play everything there is to be gained from isometric role-playing games, wrote Furevik in our review.
