Baldur’s Gate 3: A Massive Success with No Micro-Payments and DRM-Free Option

The players and critics love Baldur’s Gate 3, a game that really shouldn’t be able to climb the charts so quickly due to its genre and difficulty level.

The giant RPG game had its beta tag removed and launched on Steam and GOG on Thursday, August 3rd. There are over 80,000 reviews on Steam with a 9 out of 10 average, and on Metacritic the PC version has a 94 out of 100 average reviewer score. The success is also evident on Steamcharts, where the game quickly surpassed popular online games such as Apex Legends, PUBG, Team Fortress and GTA V with almost 600,000 simultaneous players at most.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is Steam’s second-biggest launch in 2023 when considering concurrent players. The top release, of course, remains Hogwarts Legacy, which peaked at a staggering 879,308 players during its February launch.

Before the launch of the final version, there were around 10,000 to just over 20,000 players daily, but the launch has gone insanely well for developer Larian. One of the reasons is not only that the game is referred to as very good, but also because the developers have completely dropped micro-payments: if you buy the game, you get exactly the same experience as everyone else, without any nonsense, something they themselves. The game is also available on GOG without DRM, and the fact that there are no extra payments is something the developers highlight:
