Patients may experience symptoms such as flushing, erythema, papules and pustules on the face, and the skin may feel burning and itching.
Rosacea is mainly caused by some internal and external factors that stimulate the immune system or affect the nerves, leading to excessive inflammation and facial blood vessel dilation, causing redness, papules and other symptoms. According to a survey conducted by the Rosacea Concern Group in the United States, nearly half of the respondents believed that hot sauce and alcohol would exacerbate rosacea, and more than 70% said they would “quit”. After “quitting the mouth”, 95% of the interviewees had less rosacea attacks. The American study found that the gene expression of capsaicin receptor 1 (TRPV1) was significantly higher in patients. When TRPV1 is stimulated, patients can experience severe inflammation and dilation of blood vessels. There are many substances in the daily diet that stimulate TRPV1, such as capsaicin (Capsaicin), niacin (Niacin), alcohol, etc. These substances can dilate blood vessels in the skin. In addition, rising ambient temperature, physical stress, ultraviolet light, etc. may also stimulate TRPV1.
Gut microbiome is closely related to rosacea. A Danish study found that people with rosacea had a significantly higher risk of developing intestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome and ulcerative colitis. Mild cases of rosacea are usually treated with over-the-counter medications, while severe cases may require oral antibiotics. Long-term use of antibiotics may lead to drug resistance or worsen intestinal microecological imbalance, resulting in a vicious circle. Therefore, it is very important for people with rosacea to maintain a balanced gut microbiome, especially when taking antibiotics. In addition to maintaining a healthy schedule and a balanced diet, timely supplementation of probiotics such as prebiotics is also a way to improve skin health from the gut from the inside out.
