Balance of the real game (ONCE and SELAE) and of the entertainment game in the Community of Madrid

Once again, the united sector contributes to the investigation of topics of interest to the industry, such as the SECOND REPORT ON GAMING IN THE COMMUNITY OF MADRID 2020, a work led by Professor José Antonio Gómez Yáñez of the Institute of Politics and Governance of the Carlos III University of Madrid.

In this sense, the associations that have sponsored the report are the following:

  • AEJOMA (Association of Gaming and Leisure Establishments Companies of Madrid).
  • AMADER (Madrid Association of Recreational Businessmen).
  • ANDEMAR-MADRID (Association of Entrepreneurs of Recreational Machines of Madrid).
  • ASEJU (Association of Authorized Gaming Companies).
  • ASMAREM (Association of Recreational Machines of Madrid) (FEMARA MADRID).
  • OMEGA (Madrid Business Association of Gambling Establishments).
  • OPEMARE (Madrid Provincial Association of Recreational and Gambling Machine Companies).

Here are the highlights according to a press release from the sponsoring associations:

The crisis unleashed by the covid-19 has seriously affected the gaming sector in all its aspects:

– Sales of the 2020 Christmas draw decreased by 9.8% compared to 2019 (€ 435.2 million)

– El Niño sales of 2021 were stable relative to 2020.

– The sales of the weekly draws of SELAE (Thursdays and Saturdays) and ONCE decreased by 60% between January and September (latest data available).

– Real gambling in casinos, bingo halls, lounges, bets and machines in the hospitality industry was below 50% between January and September. Mobility restrictions and zonal confinements caused this indicator to fall below 50% in the last quarter.

– A quarter of the employees in (private) entertainment gaming companies (casinos, bingo halls, lounges, gambling machines and hospitality machines) are in ERTES, which is equivalent to more than 2,000 people. There are no data on indirect jobs and in the hospitality industry destroyed by this decline in activity.

In a normal year like 2019, the data of the gaming sector in the Community of Madrid were the following:

– The ONCE scratch cards are the fastest growing game in the Community of Madrid: 30% per year.

Entertainment games represented an expense of € 707.5 million. 37.1% of this amount is allocated to special taxes on gambling and general taxes on companies and social contributions.

– The net margin for entertainment gaming companies amounted to € 444.9 million. This margin is the income of the companies, not their profits, with them they must pay their staff, facilities, equipment, soundproofing of their premises, rentals or amortizations, supplies, cleaning, etc.

– The entertainment game, in a normal year, directly employs 8,954 people.

– The hospitality machine operator sector allows income to the bars and cafeterias where their machines are located, which covers the expenses of 4,953 hospitality employees.

– The indirect jobs held by the entertainment game sector can be estimated at 18,515.

– In total, between direct, indirect and hospitality jobs, the entertainment game employs 33,322 people in the Community of Madrid.

– More than 1,086 companies, mostly SMEs, carry out their activity in the entertainment game in Madrid. 991 as gaming service operators and 95 as equipment manufacturers.
