Baku Wales-Switzerland sells only a third of available tickets

BAK, 12 Jun. (dpa/EP) –

Only 10,000 of the 30,000 tickets that were made available to fans to witness this Saturday’s Eurocup meeting between Wales and Switzerland at the Olympic Stadium in Baku have been bought, says the agency dpa, indicating that the figures offer data until the day before the game.

Baku is one of the host cities that plans to receive a larger number of spectators compared to other venues, but only a few fans were able to make the trip, according to UEFA figures. For Welsh viewers, the trip would require a long quarantine period upon return due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In 2019, Baku hosted the Europa League final between Arsenal and Chelsea, and travel was already a problem. Many English fans questioned UEFA’s choice considering how difficult it was to get to the city from Great Britain. For many fans, the tickets, which cost between 60 manats (about $ 35) and 250 manats, are too expensive.

However, for Turkey’s two Group A matches in Baku significantly more spectators are expected due to the proximity of the countries and the sympathy that many people in Azerbaijan have for Turkey.
