Baku says it is not worried about Formula 1’s plans to add a Miami grand prix to the calendar next June and the increase in the number of races.
The Baku city circuit will be the scene of its fifth Formula 1 race next month after the Azerbaijan GP returns to the calendar after last year’s cancellation. The competition will be played on your favorite date of June, which means your return to this month after 2018 and 2019 took place in April, before the beginning of summer in that area.
The F1 announced last month that the Miami Grand Prix would join the calendar in 2022, and it is slated to take place in June, potentially paired with the category’s visit to Canada.
The executive director of Baku City Circuit, Arif Rahimov, said the event’s promoters had no concerns about Miami’s addition to the calendar and its impact on Azerbaijan’s race, saying that even putting together a number of competitions in consecutive weeks is possible.
“Being close to us in terms of being in June, we have already flown from Baku to Canada before,” Rahimov said.
“So doing Baku-Miami is not further, it is almost the same distance. We have done it before. If they are in June, they can be consecutive with Canada, which is logistically possible and not extremely complicated. It is even less complicated. what to do Baku-Canada or Baku-Miami ”.
“We don’t know which races are going to come out, so I don’t know. It is very difficult for me to speculate about next year’s calendar, because there are changing circumstances. We still don’t know this year which races will be held and which ones will not.”
“We haven’t even started to talk about next year and where we want to be in 2022, because there have been a lot of changes about this year’s race, especially the news that would be there.”
“But in general, if we are close to Miami or Canada, I think the small problem is for people who have to travel from one race to another.”
F1 has yet to announce its plans for next year’s calendar, but it is getting closer to the total of 25 races that Liberty Media had raised as a goal in recent years.
There are concerns about the impact of an increased number of races on the calendar and the possible saturation it could cause, but Rahimov said he did not feel any current concerns for Azerbaijan.
“As for the influx of the public (in each of the competitions), it depends on the regions where the race is going to be held,” Rahimov said.
“If we are going to have 25 races and we are going to add five races in the United States, that is something that does not affect us because, anyway, there are not many spectators who come from the United States or that part of the world. If five races are added in the Middle East that, I suppose, would be a problem for us ”.
“Or the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States. We have a lot of spectators from Russia and if they are diverted to a different city, that would be a problem. But in terms of spectators, everything is regional and depends on where those are going to be held. competencies ”.
“I am very sure that they will always watch our race, because our race is the most fun to watch.”
