Kostas Bakoyannis returned to the issue of the state of three social structures of the Municipality of Athens, after his complaints that the Doukas administration is leading them to a “state of dissolution” and the response – refutation of the mayor.
“Today, the mayor of Athens was forced to officially admit that the Shelter for Battered Women is closed. But for him it’s just a Tuesday afternoon. No, Mr. Duke, the Battered Women’s Shelter is not going on vacation. You say to the women of Athens: “if you are abused in August, change city. We are closed”, says the former mayor of Athens and current head of the opposition in the city council in his reply.
Regarding the complaints of Mr. Bakoyannis that the specific structure “closes in the summer, due to lack of staff, as a result of which the women guests are forced to leave it and move to another place”, Mr. Doukas stated that the Hostel “will continue its services of and during August, because the women will be accommodated in another safe area of the Municipality of Athens, more suitable for their children during the summer season”.
Regarding the Center for Combating Gender-Based Violence and Multiple Discrimination, Mr. Bakoyiannis states that it is not evolving, as Mr. Doukas claims, but is closing, while its specialized staff is being fired.
Accordingly, the Multipurpose Center for the Homeless, according to Mr. Bakoyannis, is not being upgraded as the mayor assured, “but it is collapsing, while the city is once again filled with homeless people.”
“You found ready-made structures, you found secured financing, you found experienced staff, you found paved ground to do your work. Just as you found the project of upgrading the Municipal Clinics and the creation of the Rainbow House, the Protection Structure for LGBTI+ people ready, it is not enough that you are delaying them, you also have the audacity to claim that they are your projects.
What you haven’t found is the interest, willingness and time to engage.
The announcements from Kos are good, but the impression games are reaching the backs of the weakest. We regret that we forced you to interrupt your pre-election campaign to deal with Athens, but we call you even now to meet your obligations before it is too late”, concludes Mr. Bakoyiannis, accusing his successor of having put second part of the Municipality of Athens and that it gives priority to the candidacy for the presidency of PaSoK.
