Bakoyannis for Tempi: “I demand that there be justice” – 2024-03-01 16:39:02

Dora Bakoyannis gave an interview in which she referred to the tragedy of Tempi. On the occasion of completing one year, he spoke about the anger felt by parents and the political responsibilities that exist.

Initially, Mrs. Bakoyannis stated: “Difficult day. Listening to the parents, you say God kiss you. Our prayers are with these people that they will endure. Because it is a given that they will never overcome it. Very difficult thing”

He then said: “In Crete we have a wish that says ‘May God bless your children’. They don’t tell you God bless you. I am a mother, I am a grandmother. I think about these moms and dads and what can I tell you. What they call a year. A year is an eternity to the man who has lost his child.

You know it’s a great thing to feel that something needs to be done. I totally understand them when they say they want justice. The only thing I can say as a politician is that I will not let anyone be forgotten and not get justice. Not just for them, but for any other person who gets on a train or a plane and has to face such an eventuality.”

For the children’s parents, he said: “It seems like a mountain to them and I understand that. The delay seems long to them and they feel that something is being hidden. The reality is that for everyone it is a matter of honor to find the edge and especially for tomorrow. Let’s see what was at fault on each side so that there is no such possibility again”

Regarding the fact that the parents feel that there is going to be a cover-up of responsibilities: “They would feel it. There’s no way you can’t feel it. I know that feeling. You always have it. There is no chance. I know that feeling. The reality is that I trust Greek justice. There will be Nemesis. There will be justice. I understand that every hour that passes for these people is a century”

Regarding the disappointment that parents say they feel from the parliamentary exam: “And I understand that. The exam has its own rhythms, its own ways. The time of Greek justice will come at the highest level as well. You saw that now at the level of the Supreme Court. I demand that there be justice in this matter”

On whether the political management was sufficient and the criticism leveled at Mr. Karamanlis: “Mr. Karamanlis was voted by the people of Serres. It was a man who resigned at the same time. A broken man. No one steps into Karamanlis’ shoes. To put yourself in the shoes of a man who is in charge of a ministry and is called to answer for the train driver so-and-so who was in such-and-such a place. It is impossible for a minister to know who the driver is. Mr. Karamanlis will be judged by the Greek justice as everyone will be judged by the Greek justice. About what could be done. Because when he has a position of responsibility, one way or another you have to respond to that responsibility.”

He then gave an example: “I go through the tunnel in Evrytania, which also has the name “Pavlos Bakoyiannis” and almost every time I go out I pick up the phone and say guys, has such and such a lamp burned out or why is this not there. In Greece, the biggest problem that exists is maintenance. The works are done but how are they maintained. Nepotism, if it applies to security issues, has a cost”

In closing, Mrs. Bakoyannis said: “Whatever we say is a breath of fresh air for these people. They don’t care at all. We can just understand the emotions, the rage, the anger, the despair. For these people they will not get their children back and that is not something a parent will ever put up with. We have an obligation to protect future children.”
