Russian forces are trying to break through Ukrainian defense lines to surround Bakhmut, according to the head of the Ukrainian ground forces.
– Bakhmut is still an epicenter for fighting. The battle for the city continues, says General Oleksandr Syrskyi.
– The enemy is using all its forces and trying to break through the defenses in several directions to completely surround the city, the general continues.
Russia has singled out Bakhmut as a priority target as part of its strategy to take control of the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine.
The battle for Bakhmut has developed into one of the bloodiest battles in the just over a year-long war. The private military group Wagner has led the way in the attacks from the Russian side. Ukraine has insisted that the city be defended.
