Baie-Saint-Paul Celebrates Success with Fundraising Hockey “Score”

Baie-Saint-Paul “scored” in every sense of the word this Saturday, September 23.

“It’s a feeling of pride that inhabits me. All the people I spoke to had positive comments and said they were proud of their arena,” rejoices the mayor, Michael Pilote.

More than $45,000 was raised for its new fund dedicated to the City’s sports activities. The fans present in large numbers said they were overwhelmed and the young Charlevoisians left with memories that will remain engraved.

“The crowd was incredible. There are plenty of players who have come to the region too, it’s really a great success,” mentions Stéphane Quintal, ex-NHL player and member of the organizing committee.

“My father didn’t have a lot of money, but he introduced me to these kinds of events a lot. That’s how I was able to dream of playing in the National League and there is perhaps a young person today who will be inspired after meeting an ex-player,” says Dave Morissette, who wore the colors former Canadians for the occasion.

The friendly match between the former Canadians and the local Hyundai team Jean-Roch Thibault brought together several former National League players. However, eyes were particularly focused on local pride and goalkeeper, Ann-Renée Desbiens.

“Coming home and playing in front of parents, family, friends is fun. There are a lot of people I know personally or they know my parents and family. Earlier, a gentleman shouted to me to tell me that he had gone snowmobiling with me,” the athlete says with a laugh.

Like many fans, the gold medalist at the last Olympics was impressed by the renovation of the building.

” It is really nice. I think it feels good, and it makes the environment a little warmer. You feel welcome when you come here,” she comments.

Simple amateurs, representing businesses in the region, put on skates with the crème de la crème. Unforgettable moments also for the latter.

“It’s fun to come and experience a moment with people we saw on television all our youth. It’s really a special moment,” says François Labbé, amateur hockey player representing Camping le Genévrier.

A tailgate and book signing followed the match. Note that several elected officials officially cut the red ribbon on Saturday morning. This is far from being the last major event, assures the mayor.

“We have a lot of projects in mind and we are looking for different major events,” confirms the elected official.
